Acne Treatment Q & A

What is acne?

Acne is a skin disorder that occurs when the pores on the skin’s surface become blocked with dead skin cells, bacteria, and oil. Hormones and other factors can cause the gland beneath the pores to produce excess oils, and the body responds by accumulating red and white blood cells to combat infection, which often results in the formation of acne.

How does IPL acne treatment work?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) acne treatment uses short pulses of light emitted from a device into your skin. The pulsing of light prevents thermal damage to your skin and minimizes discomfort during the procedure. The light penetrates multiple skin layers to kill acne bacteria, reduce inflammation, and reduce the production of excess oils to improve redness and pigmentation of your skin.

Benefits of IPL acne treatments include:

  • A noninvasive, in-office procedure with no downtime required
  • Quick treatment sessions of about 20 minutes each
  • Fewer side effects than oral acne medications

How many acne treatment sessions are required?

Acne treatments with IPL are 4-8 treatments administered once a week and then require maintenance on a personalized patient by patient basis.

Are IPL acne treatment results permanent?

The results of IPL acne treatment depend on the severity of your skin and how well you care for your skin after treatments. Angie will recommend a touch-up session schedule based on the severity of your acne and how your skin responds to the treatment, you can increase the time between your maintenance treatments.

Can IPL acne treatments remove acne scars?

Intense Pulsed Light laser treatments will not only treat the visible appearance of acne and the bacteria that causes it, but it can treat dark acne scars. The laser can restore the dark coloring of acne scars back to your normal skin tone.

Can makeup be used after IPL acne treatments?

You can apply makeup immediately after receiving IPL acne treatments, but apply sunscreen before your makeup.
